New Ridings to be Created for First Nations Communities

The government is looking to create one or two new ridings in the far North for the next election.

Timmins James Bay MPP Gilles Bisson says this would see everything North of Highway 11 divided up so First Nations people can run their own communities. Bisson says while this is a good idea, there’s a few issues that need to be addressed first.

Bisson says for this to be a success they need to create two ridings because having one person service everything from the Quebec border to Manitoba and up to Hudson Bay is too much. He also adds since there’s no roads connecting most of these communities they would need to give the elected members enough of a budget to be able to fly and travel in that area to serve the people that live there.

Bisson feels that the government is rushing through this process and won’t do it right. He says the NDP’s will continue to push the government to see what they can get.
