Fatal Collision on Highway 11 Serves as Reminder of the Importance of Passenger Rail Service

Temiskaming-Cochrane MPP John Vanthof is stressing the importance of passenger rail service in the North.

This comes after a fatal collision last week caused Highway 11 to be closed. Vanthof says when this happens it prevents residents from being able to access health care or their families. He says when the highway closes there’s only one detour to take which goes through Quebec and the roads aren’t always well maintained. In some cases both roads can be closed leaving drivers stuck for hours.

The MPP says if you don’t have access to a vehicle the only form of transportation is bus, which isn’t accessible to some seniors or residents with medical conditions.

Vanthof says cancelling passenger rail service in the North is something the government shouldn’t have done five years ago.
