Northeastern Ontario Ranks Lowest in Community Social Media Use

A study conducted on municipalities social media use across the province ranks the Northeast region the lowest. The study conducted by Redbrick Communication shows most towns are starting to use social media with Facebook being the number one choice. In southern Ontario over 90 per cent of communities are on social media compared to only 46 per cent in the Northeast.

A couple of communities from Northern Ontario were among the highest ranked in social media use in the province. In the top 20 most liked community pages on Facebook Sudbury came in at 14th and Timmins was 18th with almost 7,000 likes.

Smooth Rock Falls also came in at 18th on the list of most likes per capita. The town has less than 1,400 people and has close to 800 likes on their Facebook page.

Communities in Northeastern Ontario may not use social media as much as other regions do, but the heads of council in our region seem to have a pretty strong following online. Studies show Timmins Mayor, Steve Black came in at seventh on the most liked pages for heads of council. Black was also ninth on the list of most likes per capita followed by Cochrane’s Mayor Peter Politis.
