The OPP in the Northeast is providing some safety tips for drivers over the winter months. Police say during the snowy months to keep a lengthy and safe distance from other vehicles as this will help provide extra braking time to avoid collisions. You should also have your brakes checked and fluids topped up when putting your winter tires on.
The OPP says to always have a cell phone with you in case of emergencies. Police say every vehicle should have a well stocked emergency supply kit which should include jumper cables, a first aid kit, blankets, extra winter clothing, a flashlight, a bag of sand and road flares. The OPP says to always have a windshield scrapper and to check the forecast before heading out for extended road trips.
Police say to drive a speed that is slow and safe enough for the weather conditions. To do their job, police say snowplows must travel slower than regular traffic. Visibility and lines of sight are reduced around plows due to blowing snow and passing them can be dangerous. Be patient and remain a safe distance away from them while driving during the winter months..
