NDP’s Promise to Eliminate the Interest Portion of Student Loans

The Ontario NDP’s say there’s a student debt crisis in the province and the first step towards fixing it is removing the interest portion off these loans.

Temiskaming-Cochrane MPP John Vanthof says if elected into office in 2018, the NDP’s will immediately remove the interest from student loans. Vanthof says debt is preventing young people from getting ahead and buying their first house or car.

He says the Liberals promised free tuition, but adds only a very small amount of people will qualify and it does nothing for the current student debt crisis in the province. Vanthof says the government is making money off the interest on student loans and eliminating that amount would be for current students as well as recent graduates.

Vanthof says Ontario has some of the highest tuition fee’s in the country and many people come out of school and aren’t able to get jobs in their field. The NDP’s have also launched a new website for students to share stories about how debt is affecting their lives and is available here.
