Safety Tips for Home Owners

As we’re in the middle of Crime Prevention Week in the province the James Bay Detachments of the OPP would like to remind home owners to take precautionary steps to keep homes safe.

Last month property crimes were amongst the highest number of offences in our area and police are providing some safety tips for home owners.

The OPP says it’s important to always lock doors and windows before leaving your house. Police say it’s best if you can keep a light on inside to give the impression that someone is home and if you plan on being away for long periods of time to make arrangements to have your lawn cut or snow shoveled. Other tips include placing a hockey stick or wooden dowel in the bottom rack of sliding doors to prevent them from opening, locking the garage and shed and using a deadbolt with at least a one inch throw on all outside doors.

If you require any further information on safeguarding your residence you can call the OPP directly.
