OPP Stats for the Month of October

The OPP has released their calls for service for the month of October. Last month officers with the James Bay Detachments responded to 1,041 calls in our area.

The highest number of offences was in property crimes and Staff Sergeant Baldassare Nuccio says that could be due to the time of year. Nuccio says with residents starting to lock up their cottages and many people visiting hunt camps, property crimes are more common.

Almost 50 property crimes were reported last month compared to 30 violent crimes and only 15 drug occurrences. Nuccio says police use proactive enforcement measures to to reduce the amount of drug related offences in our area.

Officers in Cochrane, Smooth Rock Falls, Kapuskasing, Hearst and Moosonee also completed upwards of 850 hours of road safety and traffic enforcement. Nuccio says police have been seeing fewer offences on the roads when it comes to the Big 4 which includes seat-belts, distracted, impaired or aggressive driving.

A total of 365 provincial offences and over 200 criminal code charges were laid during the month of October.
