The OPP is Reminding Drivers to be Cautious in School Zones

Almost two months into the new school year, police are reminding drivers to be careful out on the roads.

Staff Sergeant Baldassare Nuccio says due to some approaches police use, they are seeing less infractions in local school zones. He says police will patrol school zones and community safety zones before and after school to prevent any reckless or careless driving.

Nuccio says community safety zones are set up around schools and playgrounds to ensure drivers are slowing down. In these zones the speed limit may be reduced from 50 to 40 kilometres per hour. The Staff Sergeant adds in these community safety zones penalties for speeding will be increased.

Police are reminding drivers that while it’s ok to pass a school bus, drivers need to do so in a safe manner. Nuccio says if a bus is stopped on the side of the road with it’s flashing lights on and stop arm out and the driver decides to pass, they’re not only risking getting a ticket, but also endangering the lives of students who are trying to get home.
