A polar bear cub wandered into Attawapiskat over the weekend and community elders elected not to involve Cochrane’s Polar Bear Habitat.
Manager of the habitat, Karen Cummings says they always respect the authority of native leaders in these situations, but her staff is ready to help when needed. Cummings says climate change is the main cause of human/polar bear interactions.
The habitat manager says local officials decided it was best to transport the cub away from the community in hopes of reuniting it with its mother. The animal was released unharmed.
