Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP Carol Hughes is raising concerns over the amount of Health and Safety Officers in Northern Ontario.
These officers are responsible for ensuring that federally regulated workplaces are following all of the rules. Currently there is only one Health and Safety Officer for all of Northern Ontario.
The MP says the problem stems from the governments unwillingness to hire more. Hughes is calling on the Ministry of Labour to increase the number of these federal officers in the North.
Hughes says saving money should never be done at the expense of our health and safety. She says in the long run there won’t be any savings if workplaces are unsafe.
