Deadly Labour Day Long Weekend

The OPP is saying this past Labour Day weekend was the deadliest one in the last 20 years. Across the province police reported 12 road related deaths, one boat and one off-road vehicle fatality.

Distracted driving was at the forefront of the OPP’s traffic campaign over the long weekend. As a result of an intense road safety campaign, police laid close to 800 distracted driving charges.

Staff Sergeant Baldassare Nuccio with the James Bay Detachment says luckily there were no fatalities or collisions due to distracted driving in the area. Nuccio says motorists need to be completely stopped and off the road if they plan on using any devices.

Police say distracted driving has now surpassed impaired driving as the number one cause of death on the roads.
