Boating Safety Tips Ahead of Long Weekend

The OPP is advising the public to be careful on the water during the upcoming long weekend. Health Science North is working with police to encourage everyone to wear a life jacket and not to drink alcohol while out on the water.  The OPP want to remind the public that drinking and boating is just as dangerous as drinking and driving and the same laws apply.

If you suspect that someone is operating a boat while impaired call 9-1-1. If you wish to remain anonymous you can contact Crime Stoppers where you may be eligible for a cash reward up to $2,000.

Police say always wear a life jacket, use common sense on the water, be cautious of swimmers and other marine operators and be sure to always have a spot on board for water-skiers and tube riders.

Police say being well informed about safe boating practices can go a long way to ensure an enjoyable and tragedy free boating season. For more information on boating safety head to www.boatingsafety.gc.ca
