Care Providers Team Up for Dementia Strategy in the Northeast

Northeastern Ontario care providers are teaming up to create the regions first dementia strategy. Doctor H. Grant McKercher is a member of the Northeast Dementia Strategy steering committee. McKercher says that services for diagnosing, treating and supporting people with dementia are available but are not well coordinated. One of the first functions of the committee is figuring out how many people are affected and where the gaps in services are.

McKercher says right now seniors account for up to 20% percent of the population in Northeastern Ontario. Of the senior population McKercher says that about 10,000 people suffer from dementia. McKercher also believes that by working together as one whole district they will be provide the same quality of services that are available in more urban centres.
