Cottages at Higher Risk for Break-Ins

Many cottage goers are returning to their summer homes to find items they had left last year are now missing. The OPP is reminding the public to lock up your cottages while away.

Thieves are generally looking for big ticket items such as generators, power tools, electronics or ATV’s and boat motors. Criminals may also be looking for guns so never leave firearms out when you aren’t around. Consider taking expensive items home if you plan on being away for a long period of time.

There is a lot you can do to prevent thieves from stealing and assist police with investigations. Lock everything up even if you’re only leaving for short periods of time. Outdoor furniture should be stored away so they can’t be used to enter the building through a window. Install trail cams and check them regularly for vehicles or people who don’t belong.

If you see anything suspicious report it to police immediately and don’t touch anything. The sooner the investigation begins the better chance police have of locating suspects.
