Thibeault: Examples in Northern Ontario Showing Potential of Biomass

Ontario’s new Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault is clearing the air regarding subsidies for biomass.

The ministry says there aren’t subsidies for wind, solar or biomass, but rather the Feed-in-Tariff program will determine contracts based on community support, indigenous support, price and potential profit.

Thibeault says Ontario now has the largest biomass generation facility in North America at the Atikokan Generating Station which uses exclusively forestry waste from the region.

Tembec has previously said it is exploring options for a biomass facility for its forestry waste, which can’t be transferred to other mills.
