Bisson Shedding More Light on Indigenous School Board Bill

Timmins-James Bay MPP Gilles Bisson is attempting to make history in Ontario with a bill currently before Queen’s Park.

The bill would give Indigenous schools the ability to form boards and work more collaboratively.

Bisson says one of the biggest aspects of the bill is it gives a chance for reserve schools to receive equal funding to its provincial counterparts.

He says currently the federal government handles Indigenous schools but believes the province can do a better job of it.

It would mean Indigenous schools could join those boards, if they so wish, and negotiate with the province to provide funding and resources.

He says the schools could potentially have access to more resources, have more power at the bargaining table and still be able to teach in in their language, exactly like Francophone boards.
