Bisson Hoping Local Support Will Give Citizen Coalition Power to Influence Policy

A citizen’s coalition is going to bat for northerners against high hydro prices and it’s doing so with the backing of local politicians.

Timmins-James Bay MPP Gilles Bisson says these coalitions have a wide variety of people working together.

The coalition does its work through a series of town hall meetings, with another scheduled for Monday in Timmins at St. Dominque’s Parish Hall.

Bisson says if the government receives enough pressure from the public it will be forced to reverse some of its policies to save face.

He says it’s worked recently in battling increased drug prices for seniors and in the proposed municipal land tax.

Both policies were reversed after significant public backlash and Bisson says that’s exactly how the system should work.

Bisson and other northern MPPs are calling for a meeting with Ontario’s new Energy Minister, Glenn Thibeault to discuss the rising costs of gas and hydro further.
