Forest Fire Safety a Priority Following Trans-Canada Highway Closure

The two major closures along Highway 11 this past weekend have prompted the OPP to remind residents of the importance of fire safety.

The OPP says safe campfire practices are a must, especially in warm and dry conditions.

Even a cigarette butt thrown out of the window of a car, in the right conditions, can cause a grass or brush fire.

Police are asking anyone with spring grass or wood fires to instead consider composting or taking the refuse to a landfill.

The MNRF says it still has crews actively working in the areas near Hearst and White River to suppress what’s remaining of the weekend’s forest fires.
