Horwath: Northern Hospitals Forced to Make Tough Decisions Due to Funding

New Democrat Leader Andrea Horwath is calling for an end to the funding freezes for Ontario hospitals.

This comes as she’s visiting northern Ontario as part of FONOM’s annual conference.

Horwath took the time to speak with reps from the Timmins and District Hospital.

She says the lack of funding is forcing hospitals to make tough decisions, cutting front-line healthcare workers and services and is barely keeping up with inflation.

Hospitals in Ontario have cut more than 1,400 nursing positions as a result of a four-year budget freeze.

Many hospitals in the north have had to face a nearly 50 per cent increase in hydro costs alone while funding has changed.
