Last Minute Changes to Spring Bear Hunt Could Hurt Local Businesses

Concerns are being raised by the PC Natural Resources and Forestry Critic that businesses in northern Ontario will suffer from changes to this year’s spring black bear hunt.

The season is set to start on Monday, but Prince Edward-Hastings MPP Todd Smith says the province has now decided to limit the number of non-resident hunters who are allowed to take part.

In some cases, reservations have already been made to participate in the hunt.

Smith says limiting tags for non-resident hunters will leave the tourism industry in northern Ontario with a black eye, and goes against why there is a spring black bear hunt this year.

Smith says a possible solution could be to honour the permits during the spring season, and make changes before the fall hunt starts.

There is no cap on the number of resident hunters allowed to participate.
