Angus on Attawapiskat: It’s not Just an Indigenous Issue, It’s a Canadian Issue

Attawapiskat has declared a state of emergency following recent suicide attempts within its community.

The remote First Nation reported almost 30 suicide attempts last month, with 11 this past week.

Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus has been speaking out on the crisis, taking to social media over the weekend and bringing up the subject at the NDP’s convention in Edmonton.

Angus says the government never responded to a call from the Mushkegowuk Cree to launch an inquiry into the suicide crisis in the James Bay region.

Over the weekend youth from Attawapiskat, Kashechewan, Moose Factory and Fort Albany gathered to raise awareness.

The province and Health Canada say they have sent crisis teams to the community.
