Kapuskasing and Other Northern Communities Preparing to Receive Kashechewan Evacuees

More Kashechewan evacuees will be arriving in Kapuskasing next month.

As a designated evacuation centre for the region, Kapuskasing is quarter-backing the effort to keep the residents of the remote First Nation community safe.

The town’s Mayor Al Spacek says the evacuation could begin in late April.

Spacek says the evacuation’s precautionary nature has to do with the structural integrity and strength of the community’s dike as snow begins to thaw ice breaks up.

He says Smooth Rock Falls has offered to take on some of the evacuees as has Kirkland Lake if extra space is needed.
