Gelinas: OPP Losing Air Support in Sudbury Could Affect Future Search and Rescue Operations in the North

Nickel Belt MPP France Gelinas doesn’t buy the reason for why the OPP transferred their helicopter from Sudbury to Orillia.

Gelinas says a report explains the chopper was moved because there are more people in Southern Ontario.

The New Democrat says using this kind of logic means there should be no universities or cancer care treatment centres in the north.

On top of that, Gelinas says keeping the chopper in the south exposes it to another issue.

Orillia isn’t just located in the snow belt but also subject to lake effect snow which could ground the chopper more often.

Gelinas says quite a few northern municipal councils have sent her resolutions asking the OPP to move the chopper back to Sudbury.

Among other things, the helicopter is used in search and rescues.
