The Northeast OPP is taking steps to make sure residents are protecting themselves specifically from online fraud.

While you may be able to hang up a phone on a suspect call, often online scams are less transparent and in extreme cases, can lead to identity theft.

The OPP says some scams can be very elaborate; all it takes is a compromised Facebook page to expose that person’s friends to a possible virus or threat.

The OPP warns in the digital age, giving away even some information could leave you vulnerable.

Police say always have different passwords for online banking and to never click on anything you may believe is suspect.

Anti-virus and firewall software are always good investments.
