Province Taking a Closer Look at Poverty in the North

A Northern Ontario MPP is asking the province to take action on poverty in the North.

The New Democrat Critic for Community and Social Services, Sarah Campbell, says the homeless population has more than doubled in Sudbury since 2009, and the high rates continue throughout the Northeast.

Campbell says more than half of people at risk for homelessness have mental or physical health programs, and almost 200 homeless people in Sudbury are under 18 years old.

Campbell says homeless and impoverished in smaller northern communities, such as regions near Cochrane and Hornepayne, don’t have access to the social services they need.

The Minister responsible for Poverty Reduction Strategy, Deb Matthews, says the province has developed a strategy to combat poverty and homelessness for the north.
