MNR: Invasive Species Act Could Better Protect our Wildlife and Forests

The province has put forth the Invasive Species Act which could provide better protection for our wildlife here in the Northeast.

The act recently received Royal Ascent and could be implemented as early as next year.

From the Ministry of Natural Resources, Jolanta Kowalski says the Act could help with problems like Hogweed.

She says the legislation essentially gives the MNR more teeth when dealing with invasive species.

Kowalski says it does this by streamlining the assessment process and it gives organizations like the MNR an easier time dealing with threats.

She says something like preventing the transport of contaminated fire wood – a problem in the Northeast – could be dealt with faster and more efficiently.
