Lack of Mining Guidelines Under Scrutiny

Questions about a plan for northern mining are being raised at Queen’s Park.

MPP Michael Mantha asked the Minister of Northern Development and Mines, Michael Gravelle, why nothing has been done to create guidelines for development.

Mantha talked about a trial which started this past week, between Northern Superior Resources and the province.

NSR is bringing legal action over the lack of guidelines, and is the fourth company to do so since 2009.

However, Gravelle says they are consulting with First Nations.

He says Mantha is focusing on the challenges, when they have had success in increasing mineral production, opening up new mines, and are the number one jurisdiction for exploration in the country.
