New Fines, New Laws and Heftier Fines for Distracted Driving

The OPP says distracted driving charges are on the rise.

Staff Sergeant Baldassare Nuccio with the Kapuskasing and Hearst OPP says more drivers are being caught on their phones than ever before.

Nuccio says the numbers have increased because of their specific focus.

He says distracted driving is becoming one of the most common tickets handed out by police.

New traffic laws came into effect this month.

Accidents no longer need to be reported unless over $2,000 of damage is estimated to have been done.

Other new laws include cyclists needing a light, increased fines for ‘dooring’ bikers and a set fine for distracted and careless driving.
