District social services board wants provincial action on homelessness crisis

The Cochrane District Social Services Administration Board has joined the rising chorus across Ontario, asking the province to move on solving homelessness.

DSSAB chair, Timmins Mayor Michelle Boileau, says the campaign was begun by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario.  She says the call is to the Ford government to declare and treat homelessness as a crisis, and provide resources to end it.

“And only recognizing it as being a significant issue do we feel like they would then be compelled to resource it appropriately,” she says, adding “We’ve committed to trying to end chronic homelessness her in the Cochrane District. Our partners are doing the same and so we’re calling on the province to make such a commitment so that the work we’re doing isn’t in vain.”

The AMO resolution has gone to all DSSABs and municipal councils for endorsement.

Boileau calls homelessness a social, economic and especially a health crisis.
