Kap mayor and council to approve pay hike next week

Kapuskasing town council is expected to approve a pay raise next Monday night. Council recommended a 2.5 per cent increase instead of zero percent last week.

The figure is a 10 year cost of living rolling average which is the same to set user fees for municipal services and facilities.

Mayor Dave Plourde says the final decision was made after a further look into the financials.

“They were talking about waiting until budget time with the proposed zero per cent until we could look to see what we are dealing with at budget time,” he said. “We also passed the budget and the budget came out at a 3 per cent increase as you know and it allowed us a little flexibility to bring up the honorarium as well.”

Plourde says the overall number is palatable.

“And that represents about $2,500 to three grand (for all six council members and mayor) and that’s something that we can easily explain and something that needs to go similar to what we do with the fees,” he said.
