Kap Town Council looking to set up remuneration and compensation policy

Kapuskasing Town council is looking at establishing a remuneration and compensation policy. The decision came out of a lengthy discussion at last night’s meeting of how to trim some of the fat before the 2023 budget deliberations get underway.

The new policy would deal with council pay, meals as well as other reimbursable items.

Mayor Dave Plourde says what’s been causing some of the grief for council has been the high Consumer Price Index which is used to set rates for user fees and even council salary.

“And so it’s something that has to come up and something we could have a policy that would deal with everything, so it doesn’t bring it back to the table every time,” he said.

This year the CPI is at 6.9 percent and recently council voted to use a 10 year average to make increases reasonable. Plourde says it’s a new council’s prerogative of what to do once the plan is in place.

“I think ideally every new council would probably look at it anyway to see if it fits for what their agenda is,” he said. “And I think if you do it once during the term of council would take care of that and make it pretty clear for everybody.”
