Vanthof wants higher licensing standards for commercial truck drivers

The NDP will continue to advocate for higher winter maintenance standards on Highways 11 and 17, when the Ontario Legislature resumes on the 21st of this month.

Timiskaming-Cochrane New Democratic member John Vanthof says snow should be cleared within eight hours of a storm ending, not the current 12.  But he says the government has to ensure that contractors have the equipment and workers to do it.

He adds that to reduce the number of collisions involving transport trucks, the Ford government must address driver qualification and the lack of facilities along the road.

“If you drive the northern section of the highways, the government promises rest stops, but we see lots of promises, we don’t see the pavement,” he remarks.

“We have a shortage of commercial drivers, but we need to be ensured that they’re fully trained and properly licensed, and that is also a provincial responsibility.”

Vanthof says figures show that the worst crashes happen on clear roads.
