Kap Killer Waves Swim Team proving to be strong competition in the north

Kapuskasing’s competitive swim team ‘the killer waves’ is proving it’s a force to be reckoned with in the north. At a recent regional meet in Sault Ste. Marie, Kap finished fourth overall against some of the bigger communities like Sudbury and North Bay. First year head coach Sue Renaud says it’s a great accomplishment for the swimmer.

“Week after week they swam all throughout COVID, even though we did not know if we would have any competitions,” she said. “They still came and I think that gave us an advantage going into the season while other clubs were struggling to qualify. We weren’t, and our swimmers were ready.”

Renaud says the club consists of 50 swimmers with training schedules for the younger groups starting out slow.

“So three times a week for an hour, and our older ones are in the pool, four times a week and usually early in the morning — and they are swimming about six to six and a half hours a week,” she said. “And a lot of our older ones often choose to go to distance swims on top of that.”

The Waves will have more meets in the coming months, including two in Kirkland Lake.
