Timmins Pride to include Kapuskasing in new steering committee

Timmins Pride is setting up a steering committee to help the 2SLGBTQ+ community in the region have access to better services. Pride president Mathew Villeneuve says Kapuskasing and Kirkland Lake will be part of the committee because of their size. He adds that Timmins Pride gets emails asking for help but often have to refer people to the south.

“So we are trying to make sure that the services are a bit more available in the north and bridge some of those gaps,” he said. “So if people want to live and stay in the north and don’t feel like they have to move to a larger centre just to get the services that they need.”

Villeneuve says Timmins Pride wants to create a large services hub to include the entire north and give the community better access.

He adds it’s important to keep the group small so those areas can be properly taken care of.

“So we are just looking for those key spots and as we go along we are addressing places like Cochrane and Hearst and things like that, while Kapuskasing is the main focus for the area,” he said.
