New winter festival coming to Kapuskasing in March

A new winter festival is coming to Kapuskasing in mid-March. Tourism and special events coordinator Kelly Kraby says Big Winter Festiglace will be held over two weekends from March 10th to 19th.

She adds the week kicks off with performances at the Centre De Loisirs, the annual Rotary Club Bay Dip challenge and live music at the Royal Canadian Legion.

“So there’s going to be a road hockey tournament, soap box derby, ice sculpture competition, scavenger hunt, outdoor market,” she said. “So we’re really excited to reveal what’s happening in those weeks in March.”

It’s been many years since Kapuskasing had a true winter carnival that was organized by town staff. This festival is a partnership between the town, Rotary Club and Centre de Loisirs.

She adds that it’s important to take advantage of something the Model Town is known for.…and that’s snow.

“In March the weather is going to be so great it’s going to be fun to go outside and play with the friends and the family,” she said. And it falls during the March break as well. I know some people go out of town for that but a lot of people stay here.”
