Municipal user fees in Kap remain unchanged for now

There won’t be any changes for fees to use municipal facilities and services in Kapuskasing at least for now.

A motion to review of all of the fees with the exception of the airport is expected to be approved by council at the next meeting in a couple of weeks. Mayor Dave Plourde says every new council has a discussion on the subject when a term begins.

“We have to look at it; we have to make sure we are in line,” he said. “We have to make certain that what we paid to use our facilities is what we want to see. And I think these are special times and maybe we have to look at what we charge.”

Councillor and finance committee chair Martin Dinnissen says the original proposal to increase fees based on the rate of inflation was a bad move and sent the wrong message to taxpayers.

Plourde says the review should focus on the money it takes to operate the municipal facilities.

It costs us to operate an arena and what are our costs? What is our loss, and what do we expect to pay to fund that?” he said. “So I think that is a valid discussion we have to have. If we have it as a new council then it’s something we understand for the next four years.”
