Flying this weekend? Pack your patience in your carry-on

New snow removal and de-icing equipment bought this year for the Timmins Airport gets put to its first big test the next few days.

Airport manager Dave Dayment expects 30-plus centimetres of new snow from the storm bearing down on us.  He says his crews work seven days a week in the winter to do what they can to get planes in and out.

The other side of the coin is what’s going on at Toronto Pearson or City Centre Airport on Toronto Island.   He says all three airports have minimum visibility and ceiling height standards.

“What may be a lull in the storm doesn’t mean necessarily that it’s the same down in the Toronto area,” he points out. “Freezing rain is a possibility down there, I understand, which is really worse than snow.”

Flying into or out of Timmins, Dayment says check with your airline.  It could have weather-related flexible re-booking without costing you more money.

The airline’s website will also have updated departure and arrival times.

And most importantly, says Dayment, don’t pack your patience in your checked-in baggage —  keep it in your carry-on.

“That’s it and if you get it checked in and something happens, keep your toothbrush in your pocket.”
