Construction underway on expansion at Notre Dame Hospital in Hearst

Construction is already underway on the expansion of Notre Dame Hospital in Hearst. Chief Administrative Officer Sylvie Belanger says the hospital couldn’t wait any longer on funding. She adds the hospital had to upgrade various departments or risk losing services.

“We have been able to delay renovations up to a certain point but now we have been told if we don’t do this soon they will have to stop doing chemo until we have a new department,” she said. “And we did not find this acceptable to send patients to Thunder Bay, or Sudbury to get their chemo treatments.”

Belanger says that jumping the gun made sense because of the rising cost of materials and the plan is to continue to look for more sources of funding. She adds the buildings are enclosed and work is starting to proceed inside.

“Ideally all of the buildings, the new edition should be done by the end of March beginning of April and people can move in after that,” she said. “And they can continue with the renovations of the rest.”

The Moose FM Community Cares Radio-thon is tomorrow from 6 am to 6 pm to help raise money for the expansion project at the hospital.
