Kap Food Bank takes a new approach to feeding the needy over the holidays

The Kapuskasing Food Bank is keeping up with the times, and the changing demographics of Kap, with more ethnicities living in town.

Chairman Rick Bartlett says it doesn’t distribute Christmas food hampers to the needy anymore, because there’s a lot of waste. Not everyone celebrates the holidays the same.

“What the food bank has done is we’re giving out vouchers to be used at Independent Grocers. So for a single person it’s a $75 voucher, for a couple it’s a $100 voucher, a family it’s $150. It expires on Dec. 31st and they can go to the grocery store and purchase anything that they want for the Christmas or whatever holiday they’re celebrating.”

Bartlett says a turkey, for instance, “doesn’t do as well anymore.”
