Here comes winter, packing a punch

Right on time for Remembrance Day, a nasty blast of weather is headed towards our region.

Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson says a large system is moving this way.

“The transition’s going to happen between rain and perhaps freezing rain late in the morning on Thursday for Kapuskasing, Hearst, Cochrane area,” he reports, “and then go over to snow Thursday afternoon, remain mostly snow for those areas through Thursday night and into the day on Friday, Remembrance Day.”

As if that’s not enough, Coulson also predicts a strong wind blowing that all around.

That mix of rain, freezing rain, ice pellets and snow will accumulate most along the east-west corridor of Hwy. 11.

“Hearst through Kapuskasing and down into Smooth Rock Falls and Cochrane, we could be seeing 15-20cm in those areas.”

A strong northeast wind is also expected to affect visibility in addition to the slippery conditions on roads and sidewalks.
