Town of Kap to replace building-to-building wireless equipment

The Town of Kapuskasing will be replacing its building-to-building wireless equipment. Town council is expected to approve the more than $48,000 expenditure through the Modernization Fund at its next meeting later this month. Administrator Guylain Baril says the new equipment will benefit both residents and town staff.

“Well we do get complaints now from staff as well as residents who call us and be on a conversation and the phone will drop out and then they will have to call again,” he said. “It seems when the problem starts to happen it doesn’t stop so it’s on going for a period of time.”

The town’s buildings rely on communication towers for phone and internet services. Baril says the new antennas will be operating at a higher frequency, making service faster and that there’s only one internet line for all of the buildings.

“That internet line is coming into the civic and it’s broadcasting through these antennas to these different locations,” he said. “Instead of having individual internet and phone service at the different buildings. So there is a cost savings to how we are operating now in terms of a monthly fee.”

The Town hopes to have the new equipment installed in the new year.
