Progress made on new water treatment plant for Val Rita

Progress is being made on a new water treatment plant for the community of Val Rita. Mayor Johanne Baril says the town hasn’t signed an agreement with the federal and provincial governments for the $3.6 million in funding but is moving forward on getting a proposal for design and construction of the new plant.

“The ground water source in Val Rita has a extremely high concentration of  iron and manganese, and it’s been creating havoc on residents water softeners and piping inside of the homes,” she said.

Baril says the ground water is also causing major corrosion issues to the current plant and preventing workers from actually spending any length of time in the facility.

Construction could begin as early as next summer.

“We’re probably well situated at this time to actually get boots on the ground in working in refurbishing the water treatment plant by late Spring 2023 — which is quite exciting,” she said.

Baril says the move will ensure that there won’t be any delays in the project once the funding is in place.
