A knitting project to celebrate her 40th birthday quickly took off for Kapuskasing resident Danielle Ashikawa. Her goal was to knit 40 blankets to mark the occasion, but after enlisting some extra help through social media that total grew to 130.
“And not even people I knew,” she said. “They were people that I had never met before. And thanks to social media, I also had some people that I knew in other cities, provinces and even the United States that answered my call and sent the blankets over to me.”
She says all the handmade blankets were given to Sensenbrenner Hospital where each newborn will be given one.
“I remember when I had my daughters and I just loved the fact that they were in a big blanket at the hospital,” she said. “And I just can’t wait for our blankets to be able to wrap up all those newborns.”
Ashkikawa says the project was a great way for her to give back to the community that has done so much her. She adds that knitting became a great way refine her motor skills after encountering some health problems a few years ago.
