Final preparations are underway for an education and reconciliation weekend in Kapuskasing’s Riverside Park at the end of this month. It’s part of National Truth and Reconciliation Day on Friday, Sept. 30. It’s organized by APNO, Aboriginal People’s Alliance of Northern Ontario, in partnership with other various agencies, groups and organizations. Organizer Josee Foster says the planning process began in January with local groups and organizations being added to help out.
“our vision that we had was to bring the whole education system into educating our community and recognizing our survivors within our community,” she said. “And inter-generational family members that have been impacted in regards to residential schools.”
Foster says the activities are important to the indigenous community.
“Because it provides a lot of healing within our community and it provides a lot of a safe place for people to come, learn, heal and be with that fire to speak of their stories.”
Some of the events include a sacred fire, healing and sharing circles, a corn roast, and various workshops.
Everyone is invited to come out with food and refreshments available.
