Teamwork helps Kap Fire Department put out fire at the dump

Team work helped to prevent a fire at the Kapuskasing-Moonbeam Landfill site on Gurney Road from spreading to the nearby bush on Tuesday night. Fire Chief Pat Kennedy says the Moonbeam Fire Department, E-360, the town of Kap and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry were all called in for assistance. He adds the department only had a limited amount of water that was on their truck.

“Other agencies come they drop their water in this pool and we suck it out of there,” he said. “It probably took a good half hour to get a decent amount of water coming so we could pull out a second hose line and get that fire under control. I say it was probably under control fairly quickly probably within that half hour.

He adds that dump fires are tough because there are so many items that can spread the flames quickly.

“And unfortunately for us this fire here, the first started on the edge of the edge of the bushline,” he said. “The wind was completely not in our favour pushing the fire towards the bush.”

Firefighters had some extra visitors while they were putting out the blaze as four bears were at the landfill site. Kennedy says the bears seem unfazed by the people or the fire and continued on with their business.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but he adds the fire may have started from a spark of a glass bottle or the bulldozer that was working in the area.
