See flashing lights? Move over

It’s the second last long weekend of the summer, and OPP are adding more thing to the impaired driving and lack of seatbelts to what they’ll be focusing on out on the highways.

Officers will be strictly enforcing the two-decades-old Move Over law.

Constable Michelle Simard says it pertains to you seeing cruisers, tow trucks, ambulances or fire trucks on the side of the highway, with emergency lights activated.

“If you’re seeing lights, don’t panic, slow down,” she advises, “and if you can change lanes, then do that.”

Those emergency vehicles don’t have a lot of space in which to work.  Provincial police say they’ll use “robust” enforcement and education this weekend.

“We’re asking that people pay attention,” Const. Simard adds. “That’s one of your duties as a driver on the highway is you need to pay attention to what’s ahead of you.”

OPP officers laid more than 900  charges last year for not moving over.
