Newcomer camping experience coming end of August in Moonbeam

Newcomers to our region will be getting a one-of-a-kind northern Ontario experience at the end of August. Northern Ontario Francophone Immigration Support Network is finalizing a camping weekend August 26 to 28 at Remi Lake in Moonbeam. Economic Development Agent Marie- Josee Tremblay says the weekend will include camp fire music and food, fireworks, as well as team building featuring business owners and newcomers.

“We would love if the employers could engage in participating that day from 1 to 4 pm on Saturday, August 27th in order to match them with newcomers and have the diversity and inclusion for employers participating in our events.”

The network is also working with several partners on the project including Universite de Hearst.

Student Affairs Coordinator Sam Lozier says it was important to create something very unique.

“Wouldn’t it be cool if we could make them live this cottage experience which we have grown up with our whole life like the lake and camp fires, and washers and all of these sorts of things and all of the camping food like Smores, hotdog wieners, and stuff like that.”

Lozier says the organizers hope the cultural experience can create long lasting friendships and memories for years to come.

More than 100 people are expected to attend the weekend with newcomers coming in as far as Sudbury and Timmins.  Registration information will be available in the coming weeks through Eventbrite.
