The year Canada Day ‘Fun in the Sun’ almost became ‘Fun in the Snow’ in Kapuskasing

The weather outlook for Canada Day looks good – cloudy and 23 degrees.  And every Canada Day since 2001 has a lot of people in the Kap area nervously following the forecast.

That year, Chamber of Commerce manager Donna Todd was sales manager at Moose FM.  It planned “Fun in the Sun” to run June 30th and July 1st.

“First day, the celebrations went off perfectly,” she recalls. “We had lots of sun, lots of heat.”

Kids enjoyed all the activities for them and everyone liked the live music.

“And then we woke up the following morning to snow,” says Todd. “It melted throughout the rest of the day, however it was a very surprising event.”

Some activities were delayed while the snow and slush melted. But inflatables weren’t safe and the planned slip-and-slide was, well, redundant.

Todd says the radio station didn’t want to let down the people, organizations that helped with the celebration and its sponsors.  She says without all of them, nothing is possible.

“And that’s why I’m very happy to live in Northern Ontario, along the Northern Corridor,” she comments. “We have that support from our fellow Northerners.”

People in the Kap area will reminisce for a long time about the Canada Day event called “Fun in the Sun” that could have been renamed “Fun in the Snow”.
