Lightning lately doesn’t result in forest fires

Despite lightning the last few days in our region, no new forest fires have ignited.

“They can still pop up,” says natural resources ministry fire information officer Evan Lizotte, “but with the precipitation we’ve been getting with the lightning strikes, we don’t have much concern.”

The last reported fire in the Timmins-Cochrane-Kapuskasing area was on June 17th. It’s been put out.

Lizotte says that doesn’t mean we can be lax with fire.

“Even with the wet weather, we still like to promote safe burning,” he states. “So you know, we would always like to remind the public to use caution whenever performing any outdoor burning to dispose of yard waste or woody debris.”

Lizotte suggests composting instead, or bring that waste to the nearest municipal landfill site.
