Kapuskasing mom launches her own kindness challenge for the food bank

A Kapuskasing mom has launched a fundraising drive for the Food Bank in memory of her son who drowned 10 years ago. Melissa Haskett who moved to the community a year ago is looking to raise $2,000 for the Food Bank.

“Every year we try to do something in his memory,” she said. “So this year we thought what better way to give back to the Food Bank with a $500 donation and challenge all other Kapuskasing residents if they can to all put into that whether it’s a dollar or two dollars.”

To help keep her busy when she couldn’t sleep, Haskett created bracelets and used them to raise money for free swimming lessons. She says 1500 children benefited from this in the Wasaga Beach area.

“Now I want to bring it Kapuskasing where maybe next summer it will be the same thing where we fund a child where the parent does not have to pay for the swimming lessons. The child can go for free to learn that live saving skill. We can build that in Kapuskasing and start that here.”

The kindness challenge deadline is July 18th and for more information including how to donate, visit Haskett’s or the Kapuskasing Community Discussion Group’s Facebook pages.
